Meeting Minutes
The
May 25th meeting was held at the PCSO District Center on Avenue G at 7:00
PM. The meeting was called to order by
Secretary Thea Crosier. Thea announced
that President Charles Tucker was unexpectedly unable to attend this
meeting. The March minutes were read
and accepted with no changes.
Sheriff’s
Office detectives Icolt and Weiss gave a presentation on identity theft. There are many new scams and internet scams
that they made residents aware of. The
presentation presented many ways in which individuals can protect themselves
from becoming identity theft victims.
This presentation was a real “eye opener” as to what’s going on in the
world today ~ and very much appreciated by JPVRA attendees. The detectives passed out a detailed
information packet to attendees.
Some
important tips the detectives gave residents were:
-
Don’t carry your Social Security card in your wallet
-
Don’t put outgoing mail in your mailbox – take it to a Post
Office or drop box
-
Most common purse thefts occur at day care centers
-
Never leave your wallet or purse in plain view in shopping cart
-
DON’T renew your drivers license on line and have it mailed to
you. It’s much
safer to go to Drivers License bureau and do
this in person.
-
For any type of on-line ordering, detectives said do NOT use a
debit (bank) card as others can then access your bank account
information. ALWAYS use a credit card for on-line purchases.
JPV
resident Larry Cleary asked what JPVRA officers were doing to bring more
awareness about our efforts and increase attendance. This was discussed.
Several attendees stated that we
all have made an effort to pass out flyers for meetings, as well as speak to
neighbors “one on one” about JPVRA and to encourage attendance. Thea “challenged” each attendee to bring one
guest to the next meeting ~ which would double our attendance.
Several
code enforcement officials were on hand and residents gave details on several
JPV locations that they felt were in violation. These will be researched by code officials.
The
idea of street scaping at some of the main corners in JPV was again brought up
~ as well as trying to make local businesses on Recker Highway and Spirit Lake
Road become aware of the groups efforts.
Thea will send out letters to local businesses ~ encouraging them to
attend our meetings and also to GET INVOLVED in helping to beautify the JPV
area. Local businesses should share our
commitment and take on some of the responsibility of bringing JPV back to life.
One
of the code officers mentioned that Secretary Thea Crosier had implemented
bringing refreshments several months ago and had been doing this on her own and
out of pocket and that it was very much appreciated. He said that he thought it made the meetings much nicer and that
perhaps others could begin to help in this regard. Two attendees volunteered to help with refreshments for the June
meeting. Thea mentioned that Tim
McSwain had also helped by bringing coffee service to several of our meetings.
Three
new guests in attendance.
Number
in attendance was 19.
The
meeting was adjourned @ 8:05.
Next
meeting, Thursday, June 29th.
